Can Sport Inspire a Nation?

It’s been proven time and time again, that sport has the ability to bring people together – whether it’s at a global, national or grassroots community level, it is a universal language that is understood by all. With the recent successes of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games and the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, Canada will continue to inspire and engage everyone in the country to move more through Sports Day in Canada.

Sport is a powerful tool – it has the power to reduce crime, foster character and citizenship, introduce newcomers to their communities, stimulate the local economy, provide adult mentorship for young people, teach kids important life lessons and strengthen community connectedness.

Camp

On Thursday I put my boys on a coach bus, along with forty other smiling little faces, for their first taste of overnight camp.

Three hours later they were lakeside, and instead of concentrating on my work I was limping (this is your cue to ask me how my knee is doing!) down memory lane of my own camp experiences, over thirty years ago.

I loved camp as a kid. Thinking back, I realized I was pretty spoiled. I got to go to Camp Summerland, which was run by the Y. What a name! Summerland. Its like our camp owned the entire holiday. Read the rest of this entry »
